The NCAA has canceled the men’s and women’s NCAA basketball tournaments — as well as all championships for winter and spring sports, including the NCAA Track & Field Championships that were scheduled in Albuquerque this weekend.
The New Mexico State Basketball Championships, which started playing its games without fans on Thursday, has an emergency board meeting on Friday at 2 p.m. to discuss the possibility of canceling the rest of its event, which is slated to run through Saturday.
This is the NMAA release from shortly before 2 p.m. on Thursday.
“Please take this as notice that the NMAA Board of Directors’ will be holding an Emergency Meeting tomorrow (Friday, March 13th) at 2pm via teleconference. An agenda will be posted to the NMAA website soon.”
The high school games were being streamed by the NFHS Network this week, but the network has thus far refused to waive the $10.99 fee it is charging fans to see it.
Here is the release from the NCAA:
“NCAA President Mark Emmert and the Board of Governors canceled the Division I men’s and women’s 2020 basketball tournaments, as well as all remaining winter and spring NCAA championships. This decision is based on the evolving COVID-19 public health threat, our ability to ensure the events do not contribute to spread of the pandemic, and the impracticality of hosting such events at any time during this academic year given ongoing decisions by other entities.”
