Coach Ray Birmingham’s New Mexico Lobo baseball team suffered another off-field black eye when Zack Doak, a freshman on last season’s roster, was arrested for DWI last month and is no longer on the team.

KRQE television ran a story on Doak’s arrest on Wednesday with video of the arrest.

 See the story here.

Enchantment Sports asked the university if Doak had been kicked off the team because of the incident.

UNM spokesman Frank Mercogliano said, “All I have been told is Zack will not be on the 2020 team.  I do not know if the incident is the reason for that.”

In May, Lobo baseball player Jackson Weller was shot and killed in Nob Hill after a night in which he was thrown out of a bar and got into at least one fistfight.

The shooting occurred around 2:15 a.m., the morning after a Lobo baseball game and the day the team had another game scheduled. Witnesses said Weller was out with at least two other teammates during the evening.

Birmingham doesn’t have a curfew for his players.

Darian Bashir, the alleged gunman, is in custody and charged with murder. He has pleaded not guilty.

Birmingham said Weller was protecting a “first date” at the time he was gunned down, but a surveillance video viewed by Enchantment Sports — as well as eye witnesses — proved Birmingham’s claim to be false.

Enchantment Sports is still the only media to report the findings of the surveillance video.

  1. Mark,
It is my opinion that UNM should help not hurt Z. Doag.
    One mistake and he’s history?
How about helping him, a chance to right a wrong.
Moreover, those who have made this decision are Angels with nary a mistake, of any type, in their lifetime?
No, they have their own skeletons. Guraranteed. Thanks for the opportunity to comment, Mark.
