N.M. Bowl, Week 13: San Diego State still in picture, but there’s much to play out

The San Diego State Aztecs, coached by former University of New Mexico coach Rocky Long, are no longer in the running for a Mountain West football championship, but they still could be a prime contender for next month’s New Mexico Bowl.

And they have a lot of company.

The Aztecs (7-4, 4-3) have lost three of four heading into their regular-season finale at home on Saturday against Hawaii (7-5, 4-3). They are tied for third place with the Rainbow Warriors in the league’s Mountain Division.

The Mountain West already has six teams bowl eligible and has commitments with five bowl games. Wyoming (5-6, 3-4) is trying to become the seventh MW team to get bowl eligible. It needs a win on Saturday at New Mexico (3-8, 1-5) to reach the six-win qualifier.

The New Mexico Bowl matches teams from the Mountain West and Conference USA, and there are plenty of possibilities for the game.
