This week’s Galles Chevrolet Metro Player of the Week has had a rough year due to injuries and a tough schedule. However, Rio Rancho quarterback Isaiah Chavez and the Rams have persevered and started the 6A District 1 season with a 2-yard touchdown pass to Zach Vigil with :11 seconds left in the game to beat Cibola 34-28 Saturday night.

“This week’s game we knew we had to go catch a win,” says Chavez. “This was an important road win for district. We knew it was going to be a dogfight and would have to play hard until the end.”
Cibola jumped to an early two-touchdown lead, but Chavez led his Rams back, completing 27-of-38 for 326 yards and five touchdown passing to earn the victory and this week’s trophy.
“There wasn’t a lot of pressure,” says Chavez about the last-minute drive and final play. “We run through the two minute-drill every day in practice. It was really like practice, I was relaxed and felt good out there.”
The Rams are 2-4 this season after playing a really tough schedule. Chavez says, “I think it (the schedule) has made us stronger as a team and has prepared us for district and for state.”
The exact sort of thing Rio Rancho coach David Howes wants to hear.
For Chavez, the grueling schedule hasn’t been easy on him as he has missed plenty of time for the Rams due to various injuries. He assured me that he is feeling healthy these days, and he is looking at the positives. “I feel good,” says Chavez. “My team really rallied around me, and we look forward to the rest of the schedule.”
Congratulations once again to Rio Rancho quarterback Isaiah Chavez on being named the Galles Chevrolet Metro Player of the Week.
