Talk about a crowning achievement!
Actually, achievements!
Valley High senior Garrett Moseley had quite the game — and week — and is Enchantment Sports’ Galles Chevrolet Metro Player of the Week.
The Vikings’ 6-foot-3 wide receiver certainly held court during the Vikings’ 41-6 rout of Highland on Thursday (Sept. 27). Moseley had five receptions for a whopping 185 yards and four touchdowns.
And he was voted Valley’s homecoming king.
“It is definitely nice to seize your moment and be able to execute,” says Moseley. “It was a great experience. It was nice for all that to happen in front of the Valley fans and my family.”
“He is a big target with big hands,” says coach Ralph “Judge” Chavez. We have a few kids that can catch the ball, but he (Moseley) had a defender that we thought we could exploit, and he had a huge game.”
When a wide receiver visits the end zone as many times as Moseley did, we had to ask if he had a favorite.
“Right after halftime. I brought in a one-handed snag, the defense nearly caught me, but I was able to get the touchdown,” says Moseley.
New Mexico high school fans know that Chavez loves the ground-and-pound offense. So what’s up with the air attack?
“Back in the day, everyone used to run the football. When I was young coach I ran the football,” answered Chavez. “But the game has kind of turned into flag football these days. Even in the NFL, running backs aren’t as big a deal anymore. It is the way of the future. I guess that is the way football is nowadays.
“We are fortunate to have a quarterback Manny Sanchez-Vargas, who can throw the ball, and some kids who can catch the ball. Moseley is deceivingly fast and has huge strides. He looked like he was going to get caught a couple of times, but he was able to outrun them.”
While Moseley enjoyed his week and award, he assures me he isn’t finished. “I hope this is a breakout game for me and I can continue this level of performance,” he says.
