LAS VEGAS — WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (38-1-1, 34 KOs) and Canelo Alvarez (50-1-2, 34 KOs) went to war for twelve rounds on Saturday night at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Both went toe-to-toe from the opening bell with many rounds too close to call. Scores were 114-114, 115-113, 115-113 for Canelo. I had the fight 114-113 for GGG — 6-5 and one even in rounds.
The fight had its share of back-and-forth action with Canelo changing how he fought the first fight, where he did most of his fighting with his back on the ropes while GGG chased him. That one ended in a controversial draw than many at ringside thought Triple G had won.
Alvarez promised to make a better fight and he did staying in the center of the ring. GGG used his jab to control the action in most rounds, with many at ringside feeing that’s what may have given Golovkin the edge.
Both fighters suffered cuts over their eyes but nothing that was a factor.
